What is GB WhatsApp?
GB WhatsApp is an unofficial, modified version of WhatsApp. It is built by an independent development team — originally a developer known as Omar GB, and now maintained under the name HeyMods. Underneath, it runs the same messaging core as the official app: the same end-to-end encryption for your chats, the same interface you already know. The difference is roughly 200 additional features layered on top — features Meta has chosen not to add to the official client.
A few things worth being clear about. GB WhatsApp is not available on the Google Play Store. You install it by sideloading the APK manually, which is normal for modded apps but means you should only download it from a source you trust. Meta does not officially endorse modified clients, so historically there was a ban risk. The 2026 builds — including the current v18.80 — ship with a reworked anti-ban layer that has held up reliably in real-world use, but no modded app can promise a zero-risk guarantee, and we won't pretend otherwise.
If you want the one-line summary: GB WhatsApp is WhatsApp with the privacy and customisation controls most users have been asking for, packaged as a standalone APK. Around 90 million people use it daily, with India being one of the largest markets. If you are new to this, start with our step-by-step install guide — it takes about two minutes.

Why do millions of people install GB WhatsApp?
It is rarely about themes. The recurring reasons people give come down to control, flexibility, and a few limits the official app keeps in place.
Real privacy control
Hide online status, blue ticks, typing and recording — selectively, per chat. The single biggest reason people switch.
Two numbers, one phone
Run a personal and a work number in the same app with separate notifications, no clone app needed.
Make it yours
A 4,000+ theme store, custom fonts and chat bubbles — the personalisation the official app removed.
Fewer limits
Send files up to ~1 GB, post 7-minute status videos, and skip heavy photo compression.
Useful automation
Schedule messages and set auto-replies — handy for greetings, reminders and small businesses.
Maintained & scanned
Frequent updates with current anti-ban, and every build we host is VirusTotal-scanned before release.
Key features the official app doesn't have
Each feature below includes exactly where to find it in Settings — so this list doubles as a quick setup guide. See all 200+ features.
-
Hide Online Status & Blue Ticks
Stay invisible while reading. Contacts won’t see "online" or the blue double-tick, even after you open their chat.
Settings → Privacy → Hide Online Status
-
Anti-Delete Messages & Status
See messages and status updates even after the sender taps "delete for everyone". No more "this message was deleted".
Settings → Privacy → Anti-Delete Messages
-
Ghost Mode
One toggle hides your online presence, typing, and recording indicators together — a master privacy switch.
Settings → Privacy → Ghost Mode
-
Dual / Multiple Accounts
Run two WhatsApp numbers on one phone without a clone app. Separate notifications for personal and work.
Settings → Accounts → Add Account
-
4,000+ Themes
A built-in theme store changes the entire look — colours, chat bubbles, icons. Match it to your home screen.
Settings → Theme Store
-
Larger File & Media Sharing
Send files up to ~1 GB instead of 100 MB, and share higher-resolution photos without heavy compression.
Works automatically when attaching files
-
Message Scheduler
Write a message now and have it send automatically at a set time — birthday wishes, reminders, recurring messages.
Settings → Scheduled Messages → New
-
Auto-Reply
Set automatic replies when you’re busy or away — like an out-of-office for WhatsApp, per contact or all chats.
Settings → Auto Reply
-
DND Mode
Cut WhatsApp’s internet while keeping the rest of your phone online. Stops notifications without muting every chat.
Top toolbar → DND icon
-
Status & Story Downloader
Save any contact’s photo or video status straight to your gallery — no screen recording or extra app.
Open status → Download icon
-
Increased Status Limit
Post status videos up to 7 minutes (instead of 30 seconds) and longer text statuses without splitting clips.
Works automatically when posting status
-
Built-in App Lock
Lock the app with a PIN, pattern, or fingerprint — no separate locker app needed if you share your phone.
Settings → Privacy → App Lock

What I actually think about GB WhatsApp, after six months of daily use
An honest, independent six-month review.
I switched to GB WhatsApp about six months ago, mostly because I was tired of the blue ticks. People had started screenshotting my last-seen and asking why I hadn’t replied yet — a small thing, but a constant low-grade pressure. A friend mentioned the mod, I checked the hash on this page, installed it on a Sunday afternoon, and that was that. Six months later I’m still on it.
The feature I didn’t expect to use as much as I do is the message scheduler. I thought it would be a novelty. It turns out to be the setting I open most often — birthday wishes that drop at midnight, work follow-ups queued for 9 AM, a goodnight message to my parents when I know I’ll be asleep before they are. The official WhatsApp does not do this. Once you have it, you wonder why Meta has not added it in fifteen years.
The privacy controls alone are worth the install. Themes are a nice-to-have I did not end up using as much as I thought I would.
Now the honest part. The anti-ban thing is not bulletproof. I got one 24-hour temporary ban about three months in — it happened on a random Tuesday for no reason I could pin down, and lifted on its own by the next morning. Annoying, not catastrophic. I have not been banned since, and I don’t message any differently than I did on the official client. So the risk is real, just smaller than the internet makes it sound.
Would I recommend GB WhatsApp to a friend? Yes, with two caveats. If your account is critical to your job or business — the kind of account where a 24-hour outage costs you money — stay on the official client. The risk is small but the cost of being unlucky is high. For everyone else, give it a try. You can switch back in five minutes if you don’t like it. You won’t.
The verdict: Worth installing for the privacy controls and the file-size limit. Skip it if your account cannot afford even a small ban risk.

What "safe" actually means here
We would rather explain our verification honestly than show a badge that means nothing. Here is exactly what we check — and what it does and doesn't prove.
VirusTotal
Every hosted APK is uploaded to VirusTotal and the report link is published. Current v18.80 build: 64/64 engines clean.
Google Play Protect
The app installs and runs with Play Protect active; you may see a standard "unknown app" prompt, which is normal for any non-Play Store APK.
File integrity
The exact file you download is the one we scanned — no ad-injected redirects or third-party repackaging.
What it does NOT mean
A clean scan confirms the file is not malware. It does not make the app official, and it does not remove the inherent risk of using an unofficial client. We state this plainly rather than hide it.
Current build v18.80 — VirusTotal scan 64/64 engines clean, last checked 17 May 2026.
View the VirusTotal report ↗How to back up and restore your GB WhatsApp chats
Do this before installing or updating and you will never lose your message history.
- 1
Back up on your current app
On official WhatsApp: Settings → Chats → Chat Backup → Back Up. This writes a local backup to your device storage.
- 2
Note the same number
Restore only works if GB WhatsApp uses the same phone number as the backup.
- 3
Install GB WhatsApp
Follow the install guide, then verify your number with the OTP.
- 4
Restore when prompted
During first launch GB WhatsApp detects the local backup and offers Restore — tap it before completing setup.
- 5
Future backups
Inside GB WhatsApp: Settings → Chats → Backup. Keep a periodic local backup so you never lose history during an update.

GB WhatsApp: Pros & Cons
Pros
- Genuine privacy controls (online status, ticks, ghost mode)
- Dual accounts without a clone app
- Larger file sharing (~1 GB) and longer status
- Built-in scheduler, auto-reply, status downloader
- Free, no ads in the app itself
- Frequent updates with current anti-ban
Cons
- Not on Play Store — manual APK install and updates
- No official Meta support; small inherent account risk
- Slightly larger app size and battery use than official
- Updates must be installed manually when a new version drops
Our take: for most users the privacy and dual-account features outweigh the manual-update inconvenience — but if you run a critical business number, keep that one on the official app.
Common Problems & Fixes
"App not installed" error
An older version is usually still installed. Uninstall any existing GB WhatsApp first, then reinstall — your chats stay safe if you backed up.
Installation blocked by Play Protect
Tap "Install anyway", or temporarily disable Play Protect under Play Store → Profile → Play Protect → Settings.
Account banned / "you need the official app"
Don’t log in repeatedly. Switch to the latest v18.80 build (current anti-ban) and consider a secondary number for the modded client.
Messages not sending
Check DND mode isn’t on (top toolbar), confirm internet access, and allow background data for the app.
Backup not restoring
The backup must be from the same number, and the file should be in local storage (Database folder), not only Google Drive.
App keeps crashing after update
Clear cache (Settings → Apps → GB WhatsApp → Storage → Clear Cache). If it persists, reinstall the latest APK over the existing app.
No update notification
GB WhatsApp can’t auto-update via Play Store. Check this page or Settings → Updates inside the app, then install the new APK manually.
Themes not applying
Restart the app after applying a theme. If a downloaded theme fails, re-download it from the Theme Store rather than importing manually.
More edge cases are covered in our full troubleshooting guide.
What people who switched have to say
Short notes from regular GB WhatsApp users across Latin America. Different cities, different reasons to install, same takeaway: once you have it on your phone, going back to vanilla WhatsApp feels weirdly restrictive.

I was juggling personal and work WhatsApp for two years. Switched to GB WhatsApp last month and the dual-account thing alone made it worth it. Should’ve done this earlier.

What sold me was the file size limit. I send a lot of video for work — much bigger files instead of 100 MB is night and day. My clients stopped asking me to use WeTransfer.
