Official WhatsApp caught up with dual-account support. It didn't catch up all the way — here's the part that still matters.
For years, "run two WhatsApp accounts on one phone" meant either a mod like GB WhatsApp or a third-party cloning app. That changed when WhatsApp rolled out its own Multiple Accounts feature — Android first, iOS following in March 2026. Worth being precise about this, because a lot of "GB WhatsApp vs official" content online hasn't caught up: official WhatsApp genuinely does support two accounts on one device now. The comparison that actually matters is how, not whether.
The requirement that changes everything
WhatsApp's Multiple Accounts feature needs a second SIM slot or an eSIM profile — because each account is tied to its own phone number, and the phone has to be able to receive a text or call on that second number to verify it. If your phone is single-SIM, or you simply don't want to activate and pay for a second number, that feature isn't usable for you regardless of how new or capable your phone is.
GB WhatsApp's dual-account feature doesn't have that requirement. It runs a second, independent instance of the app inside the same install, so the second account doesn't need a second SIM — it needs a second phone number for verification (which can be a secondary number, a work eSIM you already have, or even a number you register but don't put in the physical SIM tray), not a second physical slot on the device.

So which one should you actually use?
If you already have a dual-SIM phone or a spare eSIM profile and want to stay entirely on official, supported software — use WhatsApp's Multiple Accounts. There's no reason to introduce an unofficial client if the official option already covers your hardware.
If your phone is single-SIM, or you don't want to activate a second physical number just to separate work and personal chats, GB WhatsApp's dual-account feature is the one built for exactly that case. Is this the same as WhatsApp Companion Mode / Linked Devices?
No, and mixing these up is common. Companion Mode links up to four additional devices to one existing account and phone number — useful for using WhatsApp on a tablet or second phone with the same number. Multiple Accounts is a different feature: two separate numbers, two separate accounts, on one phone. Neither one is what GB WhatsApp's dual-account feature does, which works without a second number or SIM.
Can I use GB WhatsApp dual accounts and official Multiple Accounts together?
There is no reason to combine them — pick whichever matches your hardware. If you have a spare SIM slot or eSIM and want to stay fully official, use WhatsApp's Multiple Accounts.
